Lancaster ND985

Lancaster ND987 is een bommenwerper van het 626 squadron R.A.F. Bomber Command die op ca. 1 km van mijn thuis is gecrasht. Op 28 mei 1944 omstreeks 2u03 sloeg de bommenwerper in de grond te Zingem.
Twee personen konden zich nog redden door te springen met hun parachute. Een van hen, Flight Sergeant Denzil Ede werd krijgsgevangen genomen. Sergeant Claude Western slaagde er in te ontsnappen en met de fiets richting Ardennen te rijden.
Dit lukte met dank aan het Verzet.

Lancaster ND987 is a bomber of 626 squadron R.A.F. Bomber Command who crashed at ca. 1 km of my home. On May 28, 1944 around 2u03 it crashed at Zingem.
Two crewmembers survived due to their parachute jump. One of them, Flight Sergeant Denzil Ede was captured and taken PoW. Sergeant Claude Western managed to escape and even took a bicycle trip to te south of Belgium. This was possible with the help of the Resistance.
