RAF Witchford a revisit to a fascinating airfield.

What respect means…

Aviation Trails

I originally visited RAF Witchford some time ago but was lucky enough to have an invite to a gathering taking place earlier this month at the site. It was a very memorable day indeed. Trail 11, which this forms part, can be found here.

RAF Witchford

Due to trafficproblems, we were not able to visit RAF Hendon on Friday. So we did that on Monday.
There is also a Lancaster, S for Sugar, in this lovely museum.

On Sunday, we have visited to the former RAF Witchford base.
This is now a Business Park (Lancaster Way Business Park) with some buildings dated from WW2.

Also, there is the “display of memorabilia RAF Witchford”,which we do recommend!

RAF Witchford was the homebase of Lancaster KO-Y, DS734 (aka. The Y’s Owells) which departed on mission to Karlsruhe but crashed at Sint-Katelijne-Waver/Mechelen (Pasbrug).
Dave Howell, son of Aubrey Howell DFC, received a replica bomberjacket, with the Y’s Owells on it, representative for his father, who flew the DS734 Lancaster.

After this visit, we went to Ely Cathedral, with it RAF Bomber Command flags.

Douane P&O Dover

Today we lost some time due to douane checks and traffic jams.
We did not manage to visit RAF Hendon (yet) but tomorrow, saturday, we make a visit to the Flying Legends Airshow at Duxford.

The photos are from our start today.
