JB455 part 2

Vandaag was ik te gast op de herdenkingsplechtigheid voor de bemanningsleden van Lancaster MG-N JB455 (7th squadron RAF).
Lancaster MG-N JB455 had als opdracht fakkels uitgooien om de doelwitten te markeren voor de andere bommenwerpers. Op de terugweg van de bombardementen op de spoorwegknooppunten en vormingsstations van Lens en Valenciennes, werden ze onder vuur genomen door een Duitse nachtjager, waarna de bommenwerper neerstortte nabij de hoeve De Bosschere.

Voor zes van de zeven bemanningsleden (P/O Douglas Reginald Cooles (Navigator,) W/O John Devlin (Flight Engineer,) F/S Cyril John Weston, F/S Cecil Nicolson, F/S James Edward Watts en F/S Steward Donald Muir) werd Anzegem de laatste rustplaats. Deze zes personen liggen tevens begraven op het ereperk van de Commonwealth War Graves te Anzegem.
Piloot H.W. Thomson MC DFC overleefde als enige de crash nadat hij uit de bommenwerper werd geslingerd en zich kon redden dankzij zijn parachute. Hij bleef uit het zicht van de Duitsers en bleef enkele dagen ondergedoken bij de familie De Bosschere.

Odo De Bosschere reed samen met H.W. Thomson MC DFC per fiets naar Wallonië bij familieleden waarna de piloot dankzij het Verzet erin slaagde om zich in Frankrijk terug bij zijn eenheid te voegen. Op 18 september 1948 crashte een vliegtuig dat deel uit maakte van de luchtbrug met Berlijn met aan boord H.W. Thomson MC DFC.

Today, I was invited at the commemoration for the crew of Lancaster MG-N JB455 (7th squadron RAF).
Lancaster MG-N JB455 had to throw flares to mark the targets for the other bombers. On the way back of their mission to bomb the railway junctions and train formations of Lens and Valenciennes railway junctions and train formation, they were attacked by a German nightfighter and the bomber crashed near the farm De Bosschere.

Six of the seven crewmembers (P/O Douglas Reginald Cooles (Navigator,) W/O John Devlin (Flight Engineer,) F/S Cyril John Weston, F/S Cecil Nicolson, F/S James Edward Watts en F/S Steward Donald Muir) died and have Anzegem as their resting place. These six persons are burried on field of honor on the cemetery of Anzegem.
Piloot H.W. Thomson MC DFC was the only one who survived the crash, after he was thrown out of the bomber and could escape with his parachute. He stayed out of sight for the German soldiers and managed to hide for a couple of days with the De Bosschere family.

Odo De Bosschere took H.W. Thomson MC DFC with a bicycle to Wallonia (the French speaking part of Belgium) to a few family members. Thanks to the Resistance, the pilot managed to get back in France to his unit. On september 18, 1948 a plane, part of the Berlin airlift, crashed with H.W. Thomson MC DFC on board.

Op 15 juni zal ik aanwezig zijn op de herdenking van Lancaster JB455. Uiteraard zullen daar ook de gesneuvelde bemanningsleden worden herdacht. Een bemanningslid overleefde de crash. Hugh Wallace Thomson MC DFC kon met behulp van het Verzet via Frankrijk terug bij zijn eenheid raken. Opmerkelijk is dat hij vier dagen werd verzorgd in een hoeve waarin Duitse soldaten waren ingekwartierd.

On June 15, I will be present at the memorial of Lancaster JB455. Off course, also the crewmembers who died will me rememberred. One of the crewmembers survived the crash. Hugh Wallace Thomson MC DFC could escape to France to get back to his unit thanks to the Resistance. Remarkable is the fact that he stayed on a farm for four days, while German soldiers were stationed.
